About the role
We are looking for a Senior Software Engineer to design, develop, and evolve large-scale cloud-native systems in Java, contributing to architectural decisions across microservices, serverless, and event-driven architectures. You will drive technical initiatives from requirements to production, mentor engineers, optimize performance at scale, and integrate AI-assisted development tools and capabilities into engineering workflows. The role combines strong coding expertise with distributed systems thinking and technical leadership across cross-functional teams.
What you will do
- Design, develop, and maintain scalable, high-performance software systems following modern software engineering best practices;
- Participate in architectural decisions and design distributed, cloud-native applications using microservices, serverless, and event-driven architectures;
- Drive technical initiatives from requirements through production deployment, translating business problems into scalable technical solutions;
- Produce clean, maintainable, well-tested, and well-documented code while promoting long-term codebase health;
- Perform code reviews focused on architecture, quality, maintainability, and performance;
- Identify performance bottlenecks, optimize production systems, and troubleshoot complex production issues;
- Develop internal engineering tools and reusable platform capabilities that improve developer productivity;
- Mentor software engineers through technical guidance, code reviews, and knowledge sharing;
- Collaborate with product managers, architects, and engineering teams to deliver high-quality solutions;
- Leverage AI-assisted development tools and modern AI technologies to improve engineering productivity.
Must haves
- 5+ years of professional software engineering experience;
- Strong experience developing enterprise-grade software using Java or another modern object-oriented programming language;
- Strong understanding of software engineering principles, Algorithms, Data Structures, and Design Patterns;
- Experience designing and building Distributed Systems in cloud-native environments;
- Experience with modern application architecture, including Microservices, Serverless, and Event-Driven Architecture;
- Experience with Docker and Kubernetes;
- Experience with CI/CD pipelines and modern software delivery practices;
- Experience identifying and optimizing performance bottlenecks in large-scale applications;
- Experience leading technical initiatives or mentoring software engineers;
- Strong understanding of enterprise application architecture;
- Experience integrating AI capabilities or leveraging AI-assisted development tools within software engineering workflows;
- Excellent analytical, debugging, and problem-solving skills;
- Strong written and verbal communication skills;
- Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively across distributed engineering teams;
- Upper-intermediate English level.

- Experience with AWS cloud services;
- Experience with modern database technologies;
- Experience with Grafana, Prometheus, or similar observability platforms;
- Experience with Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG), AI agents, Model Context Protocol (MCP), or intelligent workflow orchestration;

- Experience building internal developer tools and engineering platforms;
- Experience working on enterprise SaaS platforms;
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science or a related field.

What is the work format and schedule?
We are a remote-first company, so all our positions are remote. Schedules are flexible, but the main requirement is to have an overlap with your client’s schedule to ensure smooth collaboration. Specific details depend on the project and are discussed during the interview process.
What level of English is required?
We look for Upper-Intermediate (B2) proficiency or higher. Since you will be collaborating with international teams and global clients (including Fortune 500 companies), English is a part of your daily work.
Does AgileEngine provide work equipment?
It depends on your location. We provide equipment in Ukraine, Poland, Argentina, Colombia, Mexico, Brazil, Guatemala, Portugal, Spain, and India. In the USA, equipment is usually provided by the client; otherwise, you will be expected to use your own setup.
